What We Ate Today: Buñuelos

Our neighbor Candida was dishing up some tasty treats in our barrio this afternoon.  A dough mixture made of yucca and cheese is deep fried and then drizzled with a sauce (made with honey, cinnamon and sugar) before serving.

Although we’ve been in Nicaragua nearly two years this was our first encounter with this popular Nicaraguan snack known as buñuelos

– Priced right at 3 for C$10 ($0.40 USD) were all over the chance to try something new!

  1. I love those things!! I had them earlier this year at Maria’s house – she was the empleada at Helen’s house when I lived there last year and we became friends. They are scrumptious!!

  2. I was just checking to see what Yucca was: this is what I found…maybe I should eat that 🙂

Yucca is a tree. The root of the non-flowering plant is used to make medicine.

Yucca is used for osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, migraineheadaches, inflammation of the intestine (colitis), high cholesterol, stomach disorders, diabetes, poor circulation, and liver and gallbladder disorders.

Some people apply yucca directly to the skin for sores, skin diseases, bleeding, sprains, joint pain, baldness, and dandruff.

In foods, yucca is fried like potatoes.

In manufacturing, yucca extract is used as a foaming and flavoring agent in carbonated beverages. Many compounds from yucca have been used in the manufacture of new drugs.

    • Hi Emeline,

I’m not sure if yucca is sold at your local grocery store in Hinton, AB but I do know it’s sold in most grocery stores in Calgary. It’s also known as cassava and makes incredible french fries!

      Cheers,
      Elisha

PS. When are you and Randall coming to visit?

  3. YUM!!! Those look so good. Eat an extra one for us! Miss you both 🙂
